Community service hours: 12 out of 12
I just want to start off by apologizing to all of the prospective
pharmacology students that may across my blog for not having a “cute” blog with
a cool theme and background picture. I am tech savvy but only to a certain
extent. 🤣😝
The month of October for the pharmacology program has been crazy and when I say crazy, I mean CRAZY! This month alone we have had a total of 5 exams and 9 quizzes. Exams are biweekly and quizzes are weekly. Now, that wasn’t said to discourage anyone because I can guarantee you that being in this program is most definitely worth it! I am loving it here!! Grad school gets a 10/10 would definitely recommend. But man do you have to put some work in. I’m so happy that I invested in an iPad Pro and an Apple Pencil for more efficient and eco friendly note taking because I can only imagine the number of notebooks and pens I would have gone through by now. To keep my motivation high about pursing a career in medicine (because, let’s be honest, sometimes we find ourselves asking ourselves, “is this even worth all the stress and debt I’m putting myself into”) I watch different YouTube videos made by physicians, residents, and medical students. In their videos they sometimes go over what procedure they performed that day and what drug they gave the patient; it’s a great feeling (to me at least) to be able to hear the names of those drugs and go “hey, I know what that does!”
I had my reservations about this program due to me being a non-science
applicant but 3 months into the program I am loving it here! I don’t have a favorite
class because all of the lectures are really interesting; however, my most favorite
lecture would be Hybridization & PCR as well as Electrophoresis and
Immunoblotting. This is definitely something I would look into to try and
experiment with.
Unfortunately, there was another hurricane – hurricane delta. Fortunately, I was able to use this natural disaster to earn more volunteer hours by helping clean the debris from the yards of my elderly neighbors. This month I was also able to work with a canvas team. Together we passed out hot meal and pillows with words of encouragement all while encouraging people to vote. I also volunteered with another campaign team helping pass out milk, fruits, vegetables, water, and other grocery items. Together we were able to serve 200 families in Baton Rouge. It's always humbling to be able to help those that are less fortunate or are in need & I am truly grateful to be able to be a blessing in someone else's life.
